what are the advantages and disadvantages of laminate and solid wood flooring?

solid wood flooring Add comments

I’ve heard solid wood can shrink and dent easily, even hard wood..

Advantages
It is warm, mellow, natural and improves with edge.
Wooden worktop a bit softer and are able to absorb clatter.
It can be used to soften the hard edges and shiny finished of stainless steel and glass and will also add warmth to a cool white kitchen.
Can be installed by a proficient amateur.
Fairly easy to maintain

Disadvantages
All wood will warp to some extent in a centrally heated kitchen, though hardwoods will be less affected.
The joins of end-grain wood can start to open up if not properly sealed.
Will stain, scratch and burn so be prepared to use chopping board.

Laminate you can do yourself, but it tends to buckle easier than solid wood flooring. Laminate is about half the cost also, but you get what you pay for. With solid wood, it depends on the type of wood. Laminate also dents. One thing to consider with hardwood is if there are doors since it is usually about 1/2" thick.

I have laid both in my new home. The solid wood flooring is firm and will take many sanding cycles before needing to be replaced. The down side is that if you don’t have a very low moisture content in the wood, it will shrink as it dries and you may have gaps opening between boards.
The laminate floor is a short life floor, intended to be changed when it has worn out, it is good over boars in older UK houses as the underlay is VERY good at stopping draughts.

the only problem with them is , that your next door neighbour can hear every single word that you are saying with thiose sort of floors
because it echoes. carpet stops that from happening.

I had a hardwood floor in my foyer once. We had water leak from behind our fridge and it completely destroyed it. It cost $10,000 to fix the flooring. It would have been much easier if we had had Laminate flooring down, as it is easier and less costly to replace. However, they say that laminate flooring is not good for resale value on your house.Below are a couple of articles I found that you might find interesting, good luck!

laminate flooring looks cheap and can chip it will also warp if wet, and cold to walk on.

Solid hardwood flooring will dent, stilletto heels are the worst culprit, it will not shrink unless you get it soaking wet, it can also be sanded and repolished to remove marks.Looks much better than laminate.

if you are laying solid wood flooring you should keep it in your house for 48 hours to climatise before laying this prevent shrinkage once it has been layed.
