Laminate or Solid Wood Flooring?

solid wood flooring Add comments

We are having are flooring done in the hall/lounge/kitchen – we can’t decide on whether to go for Laminate or Solid Wood Flooring – any opinions much appreciated!

when we did our flooring we chose to go laminate. we installed it ourselves about 2 years ago, which saved lots of money (1500 sq / ft )and it still looks awsome. We have a toddler, two farrets and a cat. this is why we chose laminate.

Its very low maintence actually no maintence just a mop. we have no problems with moisture, chipping scratches and all the other stuff the other guys who are recommending wood flooring are talking about.

wood flooring is beautiful and im not against it all but for us in the long run was just more practical to go with lamentet. with the money we saved we were able to go granite in the kitchen.

I absolutly would not recomnend going with the reenginered wood, we looked into that as well. If you choose to go wood, go with wood. Or lamenant but not reengineered wood flooring.

If you can afford solid wood I’d go for solid wood. It will wear better. Especially somewhere like the hallway which will get a lot of walking on.

Laminate is hard wearing and cheaper than real wood.

Real wood is nice but costs more.

It is personal choice – I chose laminate because of the 10 year warranty on it.

Laminate is tough and durable – real wood shows all the marks and needs sealing once a year. Plus, the real wood expands and contracts more than laminate

Solid – laminate gets chipped easily and doesn’t age well

Solid wood. A visitor to your home may not comment on laminate flooring; but, he will compliment your solid wood flooring.

Solid is always better and you’ll be surprised to find that some retailers (hurting for business right now) will give you a deal. Check around. We found solid Brazilian cherry for the same price as Home Depot’s laminate.

Solid wood. Are you kidding? Do you even need to ask? If you get wood wet it will just swell up. Then when it dries it does shrink back. Laminate just flies up and has to be replaced. It can not be reused.

Honestly, I would go with solid, it is well worththe money and little extra time to install. Laminate, with pets is so loud when there claws hit it. I cant stand the constant click click click from them and solid absorbs the sound better.

solid wood looks alot better! lasts longer and will increase the overall value of your house.
Laminate is tacky and reduses the value of your house (:

I think there a three factors here, the last of which no one to date has mentioned. The first two are obvious, personal choice, and the amount of funds available. However, the third may not seem quite so obvious. You say that you are going to cover the hall , lounge and kitchen, it is almost always the case that the stairs will rise from either the hall or lounge, unless of course you live in a bungalow. If you use solid wood flooring which is considerably thicker than the laminate, you will reduce the height of the bottom riser of the stairs. This could be potentially dangerous, as all risers in a stairway should be equal. Well worth considering before making you final decision . No I am not a sales rep’ for laminate flooring.

Well solid wood finish needs more maintenance and you have to get it polished for maintenance purpose. While laminate floors do not need polish and less maintenance expenses comparatively. Here I am forwarding you the web site link that i have found helpful for you. It will help you to decide which flooring is better for you. the link is
