Not really sure how to prepare the surface for regular hardwood, but there’s a laminate flooring avalable now that they call a "floating floor." It’s really great to use in dorms and rental properties because you can actually take it with you when you go!

The first thing to do is to finish the concrete floor with with a liquid linoleum, this puts a cushion down and levels the plane of the floor perfectly. The cushion is necessary for the installation process due to the difference in the material, and since your floor is concrete, tongue and groove is the best way to go, slide together, no hammering or nails required, and this can be removed just as easily as laid if you change your mind and want carpet.

if the cement is rough you will have to put down a sub-floor, if you are putting down real wood floors it is very expensive and sould have a sub-floor installed
if you are installing laminite flooring use one that is at least 8mm thick and put down a membrane first (very thin styro-foam that comes in rolls) very easy to install, wears well and do not buy glue style type laminite flooring (to messy to install)
