is plywood floor the same as engineered wood?

engineered wood flooring Add comments

I purchase "wood flooring" as an upgrade in my new home. Just found out that this is "engineered wood" is this the same?

are you talking about hardwood floors. There is real hardwood which is 3/4 inch thick wood boards, usually oak.The engineered hardwood is a thin layer of wood on a layer of plywood or osb.Engineered wood is a good floor but if you paid for real hardwood you should have gotten real hardwood.

The engineered flooring is usually made of 3 layers. The top layer is the actual hard wood facing you will leave exposed, it is usually oak or some other type of desireable hardwood which stains well. The next two layers is usually poplar ( a softer hardwood which doesn’t stain well).

Its construction is similiar to plywood but the engineered floor is more robust. It is good to use in situations such as uneven subfloors. You should be able to sand and refinsh the engineered floor once or twice compared to 5 or 10 for solid hardwood but seeing as this is usually only done ever 10 years or so its not a big deal.

You’ll have to read the contract. It should specify. To me, engineered floors are not hardwood floors. Hardwood floors are made of hardwood, period. An engineered floor will not last as long.
